Pitigliano Etruscan Necropolis
Splendid village on an outcrop of tufo, Pitigliano is one of the attractions of incredible beauty, destination rich in history, art and tradition. The necropolis was built in the valley of the Fiora, on the right bank of the river. Its location made it unassailable from three sides by the natural tufo rocks defences, from other accessible side, protected by a moat.
In the necropolis, you can visit a variety of Etruscan tombs, in some of them were also found inscriptions and graffiti. The oldest dates back to VII-VI century BC, and "a fossa" with rectangular space into the stone and covered with stone slabs. One of the most interesting "the necropolis” of Poggio Buco, located about 8 km from Pitigliano, Manciano direction, not equipped for visitors, the finds of the necropolis are kept inside the Palazzo Orsini.
Of great interest, also, the open-air museum of the City of Living - City of the Dead and the Archaeological Museum of Pitigliano.
In the centre, shops, restaurants, accommodations, are the frame of this traditional village, where the narrow streets, the cathedral, the fortress Ursinea are reminiscent of the Middle Ages. Called “ the little Jerusalem”, for his "cohabitation" with the Jewish people, you can find a synagogue and Jewish cemetery.
From Grosseto take the SS322 for 20 km to Scansano, then take the SS323 for another 20 miles and then take the provincial road 10 for 1 km. Turn right, continue on the Maremmana for 6.5 km direction Pitigliano.
