Vitozza
In medieval times there was a fortress and walls of tufo, which is still visible. There are also the remains of a church hall with an apse. The site consists of caves (there are over 180) excavated in bedrock that are linked by stairs and were used as houses, stores or shelter for animals. Depending on their type caves can be classified into 4 different types. Coming from San Quirico there are at least three different variations.
A first group is characterized by caves with rectangular openings, on several levels connected by staircases and passages, with the houses up levels and animal shelters in the lower.
A second group are rectangular structures for animals. A third type was used for mixed uses. The disintegration of these caves of tufo, gives an incredible landscape that is unique, magnetic, able to excite as is its magic and charming.
Thousand colours fade into the lush vegetation, with light , with the colours of the houses: a great work of art. There also are many accommodation and restaurants.
