Castel Di Pietra Archeological Site
In the archaeological centre that is located near Gavorrano town hall are kept testimonies from the pre-Etruscan times to the fourteenth century.
Castel di Pietra is on the road that goes on Aurelia Ribolla on a hill South of the Metalliferous Hills, and is an important archaeological site. The castle on upper valley of the river Bruna on typically Maremma countryside. His excavation is still on and continues.
The place is the scene of the annual historical re-enactment of the "Jumping the Countess." The castle is in fact linked the tragic death of Pia De'Tolomei, which is celebrated every year on August 6th, with a "medieval fiesta” with games, gastronomy and people in old clothes. From North (A1) to reach Grosseto (SS223), exit at Civitella Marittima, Roccastrada direction, continue to Ribolla on S.P. 31 direction Follonica / Gavorrano.
From South (A12) on Aurelia SS1 exit Giuncarico (km 202), follow indications for Ribolla (about 7 km) through the village until a junction with the SP31 and turn left direction Follonica / Gavorrano. Then follow tourist indications for the castle.
